Respect for Elders and Preschoolers Week
Members of Living The Dream, INC. and community volunteers will be storytelling throughout this week about the ice and legacy of Dr. King to various Topeka area school students. Throughout this week, members of Living The Dream, INC. Will be delivering personal care baskets to select Topeka area senior centers in recogof elderly citizens
Education Outreach Day
The 19th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Poetry Competition for students in grades 5th through 12th will be held at 6:00 pm at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, Marvin Auditorium, 1515 SW 10th Street. Light refreshments will be served
Governor’s Annual MLK March and Proclamation Signing
The traditional march around the Kansas Statehouse starts at 1:00 pm from the south doors of the Kansas Capitol. The march will be led by Governor Laura Kelly, legislators, and members of the Kansas African American Affairs Commission . The march will culminate with Governor Kelly signing the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr proclamation in the first floor rotunda at 1:30 pm. Mrs Sherri Camp, a genealogy librarian at the Topeka and Shawnee County Library Public Library is the guest speaker.
Leadership Day
The Robert and Jacqueline Bugg Leadership Luncheon will be held at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, Grand Ballroom, 420 SE 6th st at 11:30 am. Corporate leaders will be recognized for their support. This luncheon is by invitation only.
Scholarship and Community Awards Banquet
The Scholarship and Awards Banquet will be held at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center Regency Ballroom, 420 SE 6th st. The doors open at 5:30 pm and the program starts at 6:30 pm. Mr. Kevin Willmott, an Academy Award winning film director and screenwriter, and professor emeritus at the University of Kansas is the keynote speaker. Graduating high school senior scholarship winners and community awards recipients will be recognized.
MLK Communitywide Worship Service,
The Topeka Ministers MLK Celebration in partnership with Living The Dream, INC is hosting a community worship service at 6:00 pm at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 1100 SE Washington St, Rev T.D. Hicks, Pastor. The guest speaker is Rev. Marcus Clark, Pastor of the Love Fellowship. Musical selection will be provided by the BSJ Singers
Dr. King National Holiday and Day of Communnity Service
• The Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Park, 1515 SE Monroe Street is hosting the Student Recognition Awards program in the Auditorium. The first, second, and third place winners of the MLK Art, Essay, and Poetry Competitions will be recognized at 10:30 am. The winning student artwork will be on display. Musical selections will be provided by Cierra Jackson.
• “Whose Dream Is It?” and the Topeka Center for Peace and Justice in partnership with Living the Dream, Inc. is sponsoring its 32nd Annual Community MLK Celebration and Chili and Soup Dinner at the First Baptist Church, 3033 SW MacVicar Avenue. The free dinner starts at 5:30 pm followed by the program at 7:00 pm. Rev. James Terrance, Jr., Pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church in Kansas City, MO is the guest speaker. Musical selections will be provided by the Westside Christian Church Bell Ringers and Minister Joseph Perry and the New Mount Zion Church Choir.
• The Topeka Rescue Mission Ministries, Inc. is hosting a King Holiday National Day of Service” in partnership with Living the Dream, Inc. Volunteers will be sorting clothing and serving meals. Volunteers should check in at the Shelter Building located at 600 N. Kansas Avenue. All volunteers must be twelve years of age or older unless accompanied by an adult.Volunteers are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and bring canned soup and vegetables, tuna, and peanut butter. Volunteers will be sorting and repacking food for children, families, and seniors in need of food assistance. Volunteers must be eight years of age or older. Special musical selections will be provided by the BJS Ensemble.
“Whose Dream Is It?” and the Topeka Center for Peace and Justice in partnership with Living the Dream, Inc. is sponsoring its 30th Annual Community MLK Celebration and Chili and Soup Dinner at the Westside Christian Church, 432 SW Lindenwood Ave., Rev. Donna Gilchrist, host pastor. The free dinner starts at 5:30 pm followed by the program at 7:00 pm. Dr. Venus Lee, CEO of GraceMed Health Clinic is the keynote speaker. Music will be provided by the Faith Temple Praise Team, Janelle Johnson, LaQuanda Jacobs and Michael Schumacher. Representation will also be provided by the Jewish, Mennonite, Baha’i and Islamic faith community. Childcare will be available for children two years and younger.

Governor's Annual MLK Walk and Proclamation Signing
Due to the weather conditions, the Governor’s March has been moved inside the State Capitol Building. The MLK program will start at 11:30 am inside the First Floor Rotunda. The march will be led by Governor Laura Kelly, legislators, and members of the Kansas African American Affairs Commission and the Topeka High School Drumline. The march will culminate with Governor Kelly signing the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. proclamation in the first floor rotunda at 12:00 noon. The keynote speaker is Dr. Robert E. Weems, Jr, the Willard Distinguished Professor of Business History at Wichita State University.

The 17th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry Competition for students in grades fifth through twelfth will be held at 6:00 pm at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, Marvin Auditorium, 1515 SW 10th Street. A reception will follow the program.

MLK Food Drive
Topeka Public Schools-USD #501 in partnership with Living the Dream, Inc. will be collecting non-breakable and non-perishable food items for community food banks. Donation bins will be placed in all Topeka Public Schools’ buildings.
